The duties required of this position will include operation of and maintenance of a vacuum excavation truck and related equipment safely and efficiently. Performance of designation and locating of a variety of underground utilities, creation of legible field sketches, perform records research, operate and maintain vacuum excavation equipment, and supervision of multiple 2 and 3 man crews. Additional responsibilities will be to hold monthly safety meetings and identify potential safety hazards and create a corrective action plan when safety hazards are recognized. Provide training, quality control and quality assurance of field activities. Responsible to coordinate survey activities performed in field. Able to order supplies to maintain a good inventory of supplies. Perform other duties as assigned.


The ideal candidate will have 10 years or more experience as a utility locator or utility designator using many types of pipe and cable locating devices including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Comprehension of geophysical and electromagnetic principals and ability to interpret utility and highway design plans, databases and record drawings is required. The ability to select and implement proper maintenance of traffic signage and follow safety precautions. Experience in Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) in accordance to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is necessary. Surveying, CADD and vacuum excavation truck experience a plus.


The skill set of the ideal candidate will include the ability to follow instructions, training and mentoring staff with a positive can-do attitude are necessary. A candidate must possess skills for positive team leadership, mentoring and effective time management skills. Skills to accurately designate and locate various subsurface utilities in varied site conditions and perform some equipment maintenance functions a plus. Mechanical aptitude is desired.

High School Diploma is required. A valid current driver’s license and have the ability to obtain a Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical card for Commercial Motor Vehicle operation is required. Current Commercial Driver’s License is a plus. NULCA or other certification is a plus.


Must be able to lift 50 pounds, walk for extended periods, work in all weather conditions, willing to work evenings/weekends when required, willing to travel for overnight and extended stay projects as required.
