Duties will include monitoring the work being done by utility owners and their contractors to relocate their plant to accommodate future and current NCDOT roadway and bridge construction projects throughout Division 9 (Winston-Salem). Will be expected to apply knowledge and experience with utilities to make field adjustments to utilities being moved to accommodate the utility contractor without causing conflicts with future roadway and bridge construction projects. Prepare reports to document construction progress. This position may eventually evolve into performing duties as a road and/or bridge inspection and materials tester on NCDOT projects.


Must have a minimum of 10 years of utility construction and/or utility construction inspection experience. Experience with the installation of dry utilities on NCDOT roadway and bridge projects a big plus. Must be able to read and understand roadway, bridge and utility plans and utility relocation agreements.


Must have good basic math, writing and reading skills. Must be physically able to lift testing equipment weighing as much as 30 pounds and walk up and down slopes and be able communicate effectively with others and the general public. Should have working knowledge of computers/iPads.

Must be able to get along and work productively with others including KCI and NCDOT technicians, contractor personnel and the public.

Degrees / Licenses (R)equired – (P)referred

Certification as an Erosion Control Level II technician, or the ability to get this certification within the first 30 days of employment, required. Will eventually be necessary to obtain additional certifications including asphalt, soil density and concrete.


Pre-employment drug testing is required as a condition of employment.
