The target candidate must be able to operate and maintain a vacuum excavation truck and related equipment safely and efficiently. Able to operate pneumatic air tools such as jackhammers and pogo tamper. Basic understanding and ability to designate/locate underground utilities, create legible field sketches, simple mathematics, field measurements, and document daily activities. Perform other duties as assigned.


An experienced candidate for this position may demonstrate a basic understanding of utility designation and marking principals using electromagnetic equipment similar to that used by One-Call or 811 technicians. Other experience for this position may include working on trenching or directional boring or test pitting excavation crews. An accumulation of 1-3 years of this type of experience may make for the ideal candidate to grow into a full Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Technician. Understanding basic traffic control and the hazards associated with working in and around traffic and following safety precautions is helpful and required on a daily basis. Surveying, CADD or vacuum excavation truck experience is a plus.


Skills required of this position include the ability to follow instructions, the ability to be trained, mentored and the physical dexterity to operate hand tools and equipment. A positive can-do attitude, a willingness to work with others to accomplish a common goal and the desire to learn are attributes in the ideal candidate. An experienced candidate will have a basic knowledge of various underground utilities and able to identify surface features associated with various utilities. Ability to perform some equipment maintenance tasks a plus. Mechanical aptitude is desired.

High School Diploma is required. A valid current driver’s license and have the ability to obtain a Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical card for Commercial Motor Vehicle operation is required. Current Commercial Driver’s License is a plus. NULCA or other certification is a plus.


Must be able to lift 50 pounds, walk for extended periods, and work in all weather conditions and climates, willing to work evenings/weekends when required, willing to travel for overnight and extended stay projects as required.
